http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/1999/china.50/asian.superpower/three.gorges/

1) What are the dimensions of the proposed dam? How big of a reservoir will it create? How long will it take to finish?

2) Name the river that the project will be built on. In what part of China is it located? How does it rank to other rivers around the world?

3) Which Chinese city would benefit the most from the lock system that will be built with the project? Why?

4) Who is Dai Qing? What happened to him and why?

5) Some experts predict some environmental hazards that will need to be addressed for the reservoir. What are they?

6) What is the social cost of the project? How many people will this effect? Where will they go and how will there lives possibly be different?

7) Why are historians critical of the project?

8) How does China get much of its current electrical supply? How much could this project help? Give the equivalent of how much energy this could produce for the United States.

9) Just like any problem and/or solution, there are positive and negative aspects. In the chart below, list THREE arguments that would support building the dam and list THREE arguments that would go against its construction.

Culture Item

Culture:
A culture is a way of life of a group of people--the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next.

For after vacation, please bring in one thing that represents your culture. This could be anything that represents you and your peers living in Sandwich, Ma, USA. Examples include: Popular foods, music, sports, school, social media. This item must be tangible and must be rather small. We will be sending a box to another place on the globe. You can buy something, make something or bring something in that you already have.

We will talk about items to bring in class.

Some ideas for what you can/might send in the #CultureBox
National flag?
A recording of the national anthem/spoken language- a book/tape/cd/dvd to learn the language?
National food from the country (that won't go off/get through customs etc!)
Official clothing?
Key rings/postcards from national landmarks?
Video messages?
Religious links to the country?
A sporting item? National Sport of the country
A cuddly toy of the National Animal
Handwritten letters?
Pictures? Photos? Paintings?
Example of school planner? School building? Lessons?
Facts and info about your culture?

Questions to consider:

Who are we?
How are we unique?
How does the world see us?
How do we recognize and begin to understand other groups of people?

Here is a link to the article from class:
http://www.opednews.com/articles/Child-Poverty-Difference-by-Peter-Opa-Africans_Child-Development_Child-Labor_Child-Poverty-131121-541.html

Look up the following information for the country of Kenya:
infant mortality rates
literacy rates
gdp
gdp per capita

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ke.html

Then see if you can find any information about the water crisis in Kenya? What are the major problems faced by people in Kenya? Is there anything we could do to help?
