The Worlds of the North and South
Research and Writing Assignment

Directions:
We will be examining the technological advancement of the early part of the 1800’s by looking at three important innovations. Eli Whitney is known for his invention of the cotton gin and a system of interchangeable parts known as the American System. The mills of the North were very important to the development of American manufacturing.

You will write an essay about the significance of either Eli Whitney or the Mill System through readings, research, and discussion. Students will choose their topic based on interest and will answer a series of questions in order to analyze the contributions to American history.


Essay:
The essay will be of the five paragraph variety.

Essay #1
Eli Whitney and Technology
1. The Cotton Gin
2. Interchangeable Parts
3. Impact on the North and South

Essay #2
The Mill System (based on the Lowell Mills)
1. Operation and purpose of a mill
2. Working conditions
3. Life in and around the mill
